MIRI OIL TOWN

Miri exist due to the emergence of oil and natural gas is first found in 1910 in Oil Well Hill, Canada Hill  in the town of Miri . Since then, the District of Miri continue growing until the present day. Miri gets its name from the tribe Miriek representing the indigenous people of Miri in the 16th century . The Europeans who came to search for oil and gas exploration in these areas accidentally changed the name Miriek to Miri. Hence the name Miri remains to this day.

This city located in northern Sarawak , is surrounded by sea on the east and borders the countries of Brunei Darussalam . Miri City Area is 977.43 sq. km. It has about 250 thousand inhabitants are ethnic Chinese , Iban , Malay , Melanau , Indian , Kayan , Kenyah , Kelabit , Penan , Bidayuh , Kedayan and others.

Once recognized as a city in May 2005, the town of Miri and the rapidly developing city is now better known as a resort because it has places of tourist interest. It makes Miri as a tourist from around the world to see its beauty. Oil exploration continues, but more concentrated on the coast of Miri.
