BRUNEI SHELL PETROLEUM - hits oil in deepwater off Brunei

THE HAGUE, the Netherlands -- Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) has discovered oil in the Geronggong prospect.

The well was drilled by the deepwater drillship Noble Phoenix in the 3rd Offshore Acreage Area, 100 km (62 mi) offshore. The water depth of around 1,000 m (~3,280 ft) is the deepest for a BSP discovery off Brunei.

Prior to arriving in Brunei, Noble Phoenix had undergone refurbishment and recertification of its thrusters, riser, and BOP systems to ensure full compliance with Shell’s HSE criteria for deepwater drilling.

Ceri Powell, Shell’s executive VP of Exploration Upstream International, said the result was “testament to the quality of the technical exploration analysis undertaken within Brunei Shell Petroleum, supported by the latest technologies and knowledge sharing from within Shell.”

The company plans to assess the full field recovery potential, which will mean further appraisal drilling over the next two years.
